What does the COVID 19 pandemic mean for our students in Bangladesh?

Since the beginning of 2018 we have been working together with our partners ZXY International and 7 STREAMS to support a primary school class at JAAGO Foundation’s international school in Rayer Bazar, Bangladesh. By covering the costs of schooling, meals and basic medical care, we want to give a total of 41 pupils the opportunity through education to improve their living conditions in order to escape poverty for a better future.

The Covid 19 pandemic has caused unprecedented suffering for millions of people around the world, especially for the poor. With strict lockdowns imposed on nations to halt the spread of the virus, cities in Bangladesh were also sealed off and schools were closed to an uncertain period. The governments’ strict orders brought the economy to a complete standstill in some areas of the country, causing unemployment to rise and leaving many people unable to finance their living.

Therefore, JAAGO promptly started distributing food parcels and medical supplies to people in need to ensure that that the children and the families of JAAGOS’ school were doing well under these circumstances. It meant hard cuts in education for the pupils of our primary school class, as personal contacts to teachers and classmates are particularly important. Due to the distance, pupils could possibly lose their connection to the curriculum and in consequence of this minimize their chance for a better future.

Therefore, alternative teaching possibilities had to be found as soon as possible. Since digital media are only available for a few, JAAGO developed a new platform called TEL-ED program to continue lessons by phone or SMS. The students got used to the new form of teaching quickly and accepted this way of learning very well. Due to this interactive education model, the teachers are having the

opportunity to respond individually to every student according to their needs and to support them with their mental health situation as well. At the end of last year, in order to make sure that the students of our primary school class can continue their study by doing well, we provided an additional support with a donation for food and necessary medical supplies.
